Review

Based on the explosive 1875 novel, El Crimen del Padre Amaro or The Crime of Padre Amaro (2002) tells the story of one Padre Amaro (Gael Garcia Bernal) who is but one of a bunch of priests behaving badly in a crime riddled region of Mexico. Amaro is a young Catholic priest under the tutelage of his Bishop, who assigns Amaro to the small rural community of Los Reyes. He's supposed to be helping Padre Benito (Sancho Gracia), but Amaro slowly discovers that Benito is helping himself--to drug-dealing profits and an affair with a restaurateur played by Angelica Aragon. Worse, the giant hospital Padre Benito is helping to build is being funded by drug cartels and acting in part as a way for the drug dealers to launder money. Meanwhile, Father Natalio (Damian Alcazar) is funding terrorist organizations who agree with his politics. Despite these dudes not living up to their roles as church leaders, Amaro wants to do the right thing. The problem is, he soon falls in love with young, pious teen Amelia (Ana Claudia Talancon), and would really like to do her, too. As you can probably tell from the title, Amaro isn't going to remain chaste. In fact, he's going to knock Amelia up, which will send both of their lives into a nasty spiral of depravity. This ain't your Holy Father's version of churchdom! The hardcore Catholics of Mexico tried to boycott this flick, only for all that controversy to make it a box office sensation. As the amorous Padre Amaro, Bernal flashes his plump rumprunner when he's thrusting between Amelia's legs. This priest has us hot under the collar! Later he will do some shirtless lounging and we'll see his thin, lean and gorgeous chest. Mr. Man would love to have that priest stick it up his rectory! Still, not showing the whole Gael gala is the real crime here!
