Review

A full three years before the phrase would become synonymous with NBA players competing in the Olympics for Team USA, The Dream Team (1989) was a wacky comedy about four mental patients, played by Peter Boyle, Christopher Lloyd, Michael Keaton, and Stephen Furst, who end up framed for murder in New York City. Dr. Jeff Weitzman (Dennis Boutsikaris) is a pretty solid dude that helps a group of four male patients at a New Jersey sanitarium. There's the cool kid, pathological liar Billy (Micheal Keaton), the dude dealing with OCD who is so deluded he thinks he's secretly a doctor instead of a patient (sounds like a good plot idea, eh Martin Scorcese) Henry (Chirstopher Lloyd), Jack (Peter Boyle) who thinks he's Jesus, and the childish, baseball obsessed Albert (Stephen Furst). Understanding that too much time in one building would make anyone crazy, the doc decides to take the four of them to a Yankee's game. It's a very cool thing for him to do, but when they get there, Dr. Weitzman runs into some corrupt cops killing a guy. They knock him out, kidnap him, and try to pin the murder on the quartet of crazy guys. All alone and not working at full capacity, the rag tag team must rely on each other’s quirks to dodge the cops, navigate the wild city to save Dr. Weitzman, and ultimately prove their innocence. Often compared to One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), this one was largely forgotten since 1985 was the first year Keaton donned the cowl as The Caped Crusader. That's a shame, because there's at least one scene that'll have you strait-jacking it! The Dream Team becomes the dreamy team when Peter Boyle reveals his balls and butt while getting up from a chair completely naked. He might be crazy, but we’re crazy in love!
