Review

Ji hun (2021), or The Soul, is a Taiwanese film about the eternal struggle for power between the classes across the generations, based on a beloved novel whose title roughly translates to "Transfer Soul." This science fiction flick is part hard-boiled detective thriller, part love story, part Asian mysticism, which embraces the magical within an otherwise realistic setting. Chang Chen stars as a successful prosecutor who learns of a flaw in the investigation that led to the conviction of someone who may be innocent. He can either turn a blind eye to the truth or dig deeper into the conspiracy that has kept a certain group of people in power for an awfully long time. The further he digs, in a bid to do the right thing, the more danger he finds himself in, and with the walls constantly closing in on him, he's going to have to hope he dig his way back out again! Throw in a healthy dash of a we're all connected type of narrative structure and you've got a pretty good idea of the tangled web being woven by all of the major characters in The Soul! It might just crush your soul to learn that there's no nudity to speak of in the flick. Chang Chen does look mighty tasty in a sexy shirtless scene, but the Chinese censorship board likely wouldn't approve of anything more scandalous than that! Still, if you're looking for a whole lot of soul in your major motion pictures, you could certainly do a lot worse than The Soul!
