The String (2009)

Secrets are inadvertently revealed in the gay-centric flick Le Fil (or, The String, 2009). Malik (Antonin Stahly-Vishwanadan) has been living a rather cosmopolitan life in France but returns to Tunisia to take care of his mother Sara (Claudia Cardinale) after his father’s unexpected death. Leaving behind a successful life as an architect in Paris -- and a life lived as an openly gay man -- Malik finds life in the very conservative Tunisia suffocating. Gay rights? Only the right to remain silent, since being LGBTQ is not allowed. Lonely and suffering from a culture shock and lack of cock, Malik later finds comfort with Bilal (Salim Kechiouche), a hunky handyman working on his mother’s estate. Since being open about their relationship is simply not an option, Malik considers marrying his lesbian friend Syrine (Ramla Ayari) since she's also in a forbidden same-sex relationship. She even wants a child and thinks he could help raise one. But those plans go up in smoke when Sara finds the smoking Malil and Bilal in bed together. With the truth about who Malik likes to freak revealed, will Malik flee back to France and leave Bilal's behind or pretend it was a one-time thing and get back in the closet?
