Based on the Elmore Leonard novel of the same name,Valdez is Coming (1971) is an anti-racist message Western film that ironically commits a pretty bad act of cultural appropriation with its casting choices. Filmed in Spain, Burt Lancaster stars as Bob Valdez, a Mexican-American constable who works for the sheriff despite facing constant racism from the Arizona locals. One day, he's tasked with preventing a black man from being lynched by a posse led by rancher Frank Tanner (Jon Cypher). Tanner's convinced the man murdered his friend, which he didn't, and Valdez is convinced he can straighten things out without violence. But when Tanner's hired gun R.L. Davis (Richard Jordan) starts shooting, things descend into a firefight that forces Valdez to kill the black man in self-defense. Since the man had a pregnant Apache wife (Juanita Penaloza), Valdez demands that Tanner give her money for killing her husband. Instead, Tanner and his men tie Valdez to a cross and leave him to die in the desert. Of course, Valdez survives and sets out for revenge against Tanner and all his men. Valdez is coming! We want Jon Cypher to come our way after we see him shirtless with his vintage chest hair while he wears long johns! Jon was more of a Broadway star than a movie star, which is a shame because he livened up this Western with a moon shot before any cowboy rode off into the sunset. Jon in his long undies is quite a feast for the eyes, especially when he takes them off to show off his butt before he gets in bed with his wife (Susan Clark). Now that's a lucky lady! Seeing that ass, it's not just Valdez who is coming!
