Life-altering disease is synonymous with drama, and when a talented and dedicated team of cinematic artists takes on the theme of medical adversity, as in director Andrei Konchalovsky and crew’s Duet for One (1986), the serious viewer can expect a tale of dignity and perseverance in the face of implacable fate. Comedienne and renowned star of light musical productions Julie Andrews breaks from the type and delivers an inspiring and affecting performance as a renowned concert violinist stricken by the debilitating malady, multiple sclerosis. As the illness progresses, she loses the release of music and the refuge of her husband but finds a strength she’d never before suspected, which proves is inherent in us all. Liam Neeson bares buns through a shower door, then uses a towel dry off his junk, but puts on a robe before flopping into bed with Julie Andrews. His hills are alive!
