Legendary director Howard Hawks once made essentially the same movie three separate times, all three times starring John Wayne in basically the exact same role: First in Rio Bravo (1959) opposite Dean Martin, the third time with Rio Lobo (1970), but it's the one in between those two that is perhaps the most well known. El Dorado (1966) stars Wayne as Cole Thornton, a gun for hire who arrives in the titular town to take a job from wealthy landowner Bart Jason (Ed Asner). Thornton is surprised to see his old pal J.P. Harrah (Robert Mitchum) is now the sheriff of the town and is even more surprised when Harrah informs him that Jason has actually hired Thornton to muscle an honest family off their land, which he wants to acquire. After a misunderstanding leads to a shootout, Thornton receives a non-fatal bullet wound close to his spine that ends up severely diminishing his skills, putting him in a precarious position when Harrah asks him to stay in town and help settle the dispute between these two warring families. The town's saloon owner Maudie (Charlene Holt) is sweet on Thornton, which helps in decision to stay in town and help his old friend maintain a sense of law and order. For a western made during the days of the Hays Code, you can't expect much nudity in this one, though there is a supremely sexy scene where Robert Mitchum shows off his bare bod in the bath! Sadly the tub keeps us from seeing any of the good stuff, but let your imagination fill in the gaps! El Dorado will have you gripping your six shooter!
