Prick Up Your Ears (1987) tells the story of playwright Joe Orton (Gary Oldman) and his older lover Kenneth Halliwell (Alfred Molina). In a twist on Pygmalion, The young Orton begins a relationship with the older and more established writer Halliwell. As time goes on, the student becomes the master and the master becomes the crazed, put upon “wife” in their hidden relationship. Things come to a head when Orton is approached to meet with the Beatles about a project and leaves Halliwell behind. Despondent, Halliwell kills Orton and commits suicide.
There is a lot of relationship talk, but not a lot of relationship action here. Oldman is seen quite a bit parading around in his tighty whiteys that accentuate “little Gary”. In one brief shot he whips off his pants and we get a brief view of his almost iridescent seat cheeks. Molina saves his nudity until he’s become a murderer. After the deed is done, he lays his nakedness down next to Oldman’s lifeless body. Homicidal nudity still counts as nudity.
