Smart People (2008)

The indie romantic comedy Smart People (2008) stars Dennis Quaid as Lawrence Wetherhold, a bitter, widowed Carnegie Mellon Literature professor who lives with his wise-cracking and politically conservative teenage daughter, Vanessa (Elliott Page), barely ever sees his student son (Ashton Holmes), and can hardly tolerate his unemployed mooch of an adopted brother, Chuck (Thomas Hayden Church). Everything changes when Lawrence gets a concussion and comes into the care of emergency-room doctor Janet Hartigan (Sarah Jessica Parker), who also happens to be a former student who used to have a crush on him. Apparently, she still does! Since his head injury is going to require him to keep from getting behind the wheel, Chuck moves in with him and the two are forced to hash out the issues they've been keeping buried for decades. Will finding love and brotherhood make Lawrence less of a curmudgeon or is he bound to live life constantly bummed? Did someone say bum? If you’re a Thomas Hayden Church fan, you’re in for a bare-butt treat when Church lies in a bed face-down, in the buff. He's bareass the first time it happens, but a little later in the movie we see his buns sticking out of an adorable grown man onesie. If we hit our head, will he give us a ride? And no, we're not talking about in a car! Ashton Holmes doesn't go that far, but he does strip down to shirtlessness to try and get his dad to go away when he tries to visit him at the dorm. You know who was really smart? The Smart People who made sure to include a bit of Thomas Hayden Church's fanny in the movie!
