Successful film director John L. Sullivan (Joel McCrea) is getting tired of making silly comedies and musicals. He yearns to make films with a larger social significance, addressing issues of poverty and unemployment. But the problem is that the well-intentioned filmmaker was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and he’s only known the good life. So John heads off to discover how the other half lives, hence the film’s title Sullivan’s Travels (1941). Even though his studio bosses Mr. LeBrand (Robert Warwick) and Mr. Hadrian (Porter Hall) think he’s crazy, John ignores them, puts on his hobo clothes, and takes off to travel the world. John’s journey leads him to lose his shirt and show off his sweaty body while digging ditches with a bunch of hunks.
