South Miami Beach is never a drag, especially when there’s a nightclub on every corner. But the cabaret owned by Armand Goldman (Robin Williams) in The Birdcage (1996) is a drag. . . club. Goldman’s domestic darling, Albert (Nathan Lane) aka “Starina,” is the club’s star queen. When Goldman’s son Val (Dan Futterman), a product of a hetero hook-up, announces his engagement to Barbara Keely (Calista Flockhart), daughter of an ultra-conservative senator, the two families agree to meet. To prevent any provocation, Val asks the queer clubbers to pretend to be straight for the family get-together. Hilarity ensues with Agador (Hank Azaria), the couple’s Guatemalan houseboy, is unable to restrain the gay and nearly blows their charade with his flamboyant follies. You’ll get a look at Azaria’s backside poolside as he prances around wearing nothing but a g-thing, cleaning the pool. Hank’s heavenly hams will uncage your bird.
