The fate of a coal mine and a brass band are inexplicably tied together in Brassed Off (1996). This critically-acclaimed dramedy ranked 85th on the British Film Institute’s list of the Top 100 British Films. Under the direction of Mark Herman (who co-wrote the screenplay), the R rated flick takes place in Grimley. Not only is the town dominated by a coal mine where most of its inhabitants work, it is home to the Grimley Colliery Band, an award winning brass ensemble led by Danny Ormondroyd (Pete Postlewaite). But with news of the mine closing down, the coal miners who moonlight as musicians — including euphonium player Harry (Jim Carter), trombonist (Stephen Tompkinson), and tuba players Jim (Philip Jackson) and Ernie (Peter Martin) — no longer have the heart to compete in the upcoming national championship. Luckily, when famed flugelhorn player Gloria Mullins (Tara Fitzgerald) comes back to the village, she rekindles a romance with horny horn player Andy Barrow (Ewan McGregor), and injects some life into the band members who may soon be heading to the unemployment line. Will things turn around for the miners? Or will they lose their jobs and the competition? More importantly, will the movie offer some dudity? Mr. Man is happy to say Mr. McGregor shows off his McAbs, McAss, and McCock when he showers with a bunch of other naked hunks during the opening credits. What a way to kick off the plot! Although the scene is brief, Ewan’s shiny brass will wet your whistle!
