Coffee Date (2005)

A charming, touching indie movie by writer/director Stewart Wade, Coffee Date (2006) tells the story of Todd (Jonathan Bray), a straight guy who’s set up on a blind coffee date by his brother Barry (Jonathan Silverman). Todd is told the date is with “Kelly,” but Kelly (Wilson Cruz) turns out to be the very gay and very out owner of a neighborhood salon. The twist? Todd and Kelly share lots of the same interests and hit it off. Their friendship begins to blossom, and everyone else in Todd’s life starts to believe he’s gay. The cast of cuties includes Cruz, an actor who’s been openly gay since his child actor days on “My So-Called Life.” Though any steaminess is more likely to come more from hot cups of coffee than hot sex scenes, Coffee Date is a funny, touching exploration of what it means to be straight, what it means to be gay, and what it means to be friends.
