John from Cincinnati (2007)

In 2007 David Milch, the creator of Deadwood, returned to HBO with John from Cincinnati, a "surf noir" series about a seriously screwed up Southern California clan whose lives are changed by a newbie to the community: the mysterious, mystical John Monad (Austin Nichols). Needless to say, this was a strange one, with Milch teaming with Tapping the Source novelist Kem Nunn to craft the magical realism filled story. Basically, Mitch Yost (Brian Van Holt) is a heroin addicted pro surfer, although his father (Bruce Greenwood) loathes the idea of surfing for prizes, and things have been awkward with his mom (Rebecca De Mornay) since she gave him a handy while on LSD. Butchie's son (Greyson Fletcher) is projected to be an even better pro than he is despite being barely a teen, which has surf agent Linc Stark (Luke Perry) salivating over the opportunity to sign him. All their lives are thrown into disarray when John shows up, showing amazing surfing skills despite being from Ohio, astral projects all over the place, creates objects in his pockets, and does all sorts of other stuff that has everyone wondering what's going on. So, what is going on? We'll never know, since this one was canceled after its first-season finale due to disappointing ratings. But while you'll never heard it mentioned among HBO's best, the show still has plenty of fans due in part to the slew of hot surfers in skintight wet suits, not to mention Austin Nichols’ side nudity as he sits on the toilet. John on the John. How sexy! Luke Perry is as dreamy as ever lying in bed shirtless while thinking about making some big moves in the business world, while it really floated our boat seeing Bruce Greenwood somehow floating in his boxers. If only he'd made the magic happen on the bed next to him! Throw in Brian Van Holt looking all gruff and tatted getting out of bed, and Paul Ben-Victor being pulled away in his whitey tighties and you'll be surfing the web looking for more of those scenes! It might have been an odd show but John from Cincinatti will still have you waxing your longboard!
