Rambo III (1988)

Three years after ending The Cold War in Rocky IV (1985), Sylvester Stallone returned to fight the Russians again in Rambo III (1988). Fresh off his battles with local cops and the Viet Cong, John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) is looking for peace by living in a Buddhist Monastery. The film begins with Col. Sam Trautman (Richard Crenna) traveling to Thailand to convince Rambo to accompany him on a training mission in Afghanistan. Committed to living a life of nonviolence, Rambo declines, prompting Trautman to go alone, where he is captured by the sadistic Russian colonel (Marc de Jonge), who ruthlessly tortures him. When Rambo gets word of this, he volunteers for a top-secret undercover mission to rescue his friend. Since this is a Rambo movie, it probably goes without saying that this will involve a lot of shirtless sweaty fights to the death with the Italian Stallion doing what he does best. To that end, there's a great scene where John is rescuing POWs shirtless, just kicking the crap out of people with knifes, pipes and all other sorts of melee weapons. But what young people might be surprised to learn is that Rambo teams with Afghani Freedom Fighters, many of whom the USA would end up fighting against after 9/11. Whoops. Stallone doesn't stall too long before ripping off his shirt and showcasing his ridiculously ripped muscles lathered in body oil and righteous revenge. Unfortunately, he doesn't sport the thong he did in Rambo II (1985) but sexy Sylvester still looks good kicking ass and taking names in this final chapter in the Rambo trilogy, before 2008's Rambo reboot revived the series with a fourth installment. No man has looked so damn hot killing Soviets as Rambo did here! Sly has looked good before, but we never had a Ramboner like we did after watching Rambo III!
