The Awakening (1980)

14 years prior to directing the Best Picture Oscar-nominated classic Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994), British director Mike Newell made his feature film directorial debut with The Awakening (1980)! Hollywood legend Chuck Heston stars as American archaeologist Matthew Corbeck, who is visiting Egypt with his very pregnant wife Anne (Jill Townsend) on a search for the fabled tomb of a powerful ancient Egyptian queen. On the day that he discovers the tomb, his wife is simultaneously giving birth—in fact, she gives birth at the exact same moment that Matthew cracks the seal on the tomb. 20 years later, back in America, Matthew and Anne are living quite happy with their now adult daughter Margaret (Stephanie Zimbalist), though on the eve of her 21st birthday, she begins demonstrating signs that she may have been possessed by the spirit of that ancient queen her father unearthed two decades earlier. With time running out before she turns 21 and takes on the full power of the long dead Egyptian queen, Chuck Heston must spring into action and consult with a colleague and expert on the occult—played by Emperor Palpatine himself, Ian McDiarmid! Their only hope of preventing catastrophe lies in an ancient ritual that hasn't been performed in millennia, and if they don't get it exactly right, it's game over for the entire world! If you're looking for a great place to see an aged Chuck Heston show off some of that raw shirtless machismo that made him famous in the first place, you could do a lot worse than his multiple toned and tanned shirtless scenes in this flick!
