Directed by Angelina Jolie, with a screenplay written in part by The Coen Brothers, the epic drama Unbroken (2014) tells the incredible true story of World War II bombardier pilot Louis Zamperini (Jack O’Connell) who, along with his crewmen, Phil (Domhnall Gleeson), survived nearly seven weeks in a raft after their plane crashed. And that was the easy part! They end up rescued, only to realize that their saviors are actually the enemy and as soon as they're pulled out of the water, they're getting sent to a prisoner of war camp. While drifting in the raft, the film flashes back to show Louis’ life before the war, where the California kid earned the nickname “The Torrance Tornado” for his amazing accomplishments as a distance runner, highlighted by competing in the 1936 Summer Olympics. He didn't medal, but he showed tons of mettle! But track records really don’t mean anything when the P.O.W. camp Louis dwells in is headed by the vindictively cruel corporal, Mutsuhiro “Bird” Watanabe (Takamasa Ishihara) who takes a special pleasure in torturing and humiliating Louis. Louis refuses to let him break his will or spirit, though with each passing day that becomes more and more difficult. In what's supposed to be an unsexy scene of humiliation, both Jack O’Connell and Domhnall Gleeson are forced to strip naked, rewarding us with a look at their wounded bodies and sexy rumps. Both are rather thin and malnourished, but there's a certain heroin chic aspect to their visible ribs and protruding clavicles. We'd love to fill those bodies with some meat and aren't even close to ashamed to admit it! Unbroken will have you breaking out the tissues for a few different reasons!
