David Lynch’s American surburbia portrayed in Blue Velvet (1986) is a bizarre, surreal landscape where Jeffery Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan) returns home to his picture-perfect small town when his father suffers a stroke. Wandering through a field near his home, Beaumont discovers a severed ear covered with ants. With the local police unable to investigate the loped off lobe, Jeffery and the detective’s daughter Sandy (Laura Dern) begin an investigation that leads the couple to a dark underworld. Jeffery soon becomes suspicious of nightclub singer Dorothy Vallens (Isabella Rossellini) and keeps an eye on her that gets the impromptu investigator drawn into the singer’s sexual web. Solving a crime has never been this sexy. MacLachlan’s twin cheeks are fleshed out when Rossellini forces him to strip at knifepoint. There are numerous frames of the knife-wielding waif groping her captive’s cans. MacLachlan manages to reveal his semi-erect peak as it bounces against his abdomen when he runs across a room. In the nude, Kyle can remove the blue with his velvet view.
