People do a lot of shady things when their backs are against the wall, especially when money is involved, such is the case in the comedy horror High Spirits (1988). Peter Plunkett (Peter O’Toole) is an owner of a remote rundown castle in Ireland that’s been turned into a bed and breakfast. It’s not the most lucrative business in the world, but it supplies the only form of employment for the local dwellers. Neck deep in debt to an American businessman, Peter needs to come up with a lot of cash right away. The scheming owner conjures up the plan of turning the castle into a haunted retreat to tap into the tourist trade, and Peter and his staff Mary and Martin (Daryl Hannah and Liam Neeson) get ghostly. But while they’re working on their scare tactics, they’re also working on a love affair. The staff’s inability to put on a convincing scare upsets their ghost-craving guests Jack and Miranda (Steve Guttenberg and Jennifer Tilly). Everyone soon gets more than what they bargained for when the actual spirits of the castle get into a haunting mood. And you’ll be in the mood for some self-loving when both Steve Guttenberg and Liam Neeson show off their shirtless bodies. We’d love to experience their turndown services!
